How to manage employee discipline in the work place ?
Introduction
Discipline in the organization consists of setting clearly defined limits for employees. Majority of workers in crises often claim to not clearly understand organization’s limits, since most of them come from places where discipline was not consistent. Disciplinary policies are a guide to an orderly conduct in the workplace in order to achieve the organizational goal(Gatchalian and Lumiqued, 2005).
When employees believe that their organization is fair, it is unlikely that they will be involved in misconducts (De Schrijver et al, 2010).
Rules of behaviour
Every organization has rules about time-keeping, quality standards, safety and personal hygiene. Rules of behaviour in the workplace should be clear, understood and are sufficient to cover all obvious and usual disciplinary matters.
Employers should be provided written information for their employees about certain aspects of their disciplinary rules and procedures (The UK Employment Rights Act, 1996).
Penalties
The employer can impose some penalties for infractions, such as:
- rebuke
- warnings
- transfer or demotion
- suspension
- dismissal
A rebuke is in simply ‘Don’t do that.’ For most employees, the rebuke may be sufficient to change behavior. Formal warnings should not be given lightly because the manager is making commitment to action if the behavior is repeated. Further, the legislation on dismissal in Western countries has made the system of warnings an integral part of disciplinary practice, which has to be followed if the employer is to succeed in defending a dismissal decision.
There is an array of legal statute and intended to safeguard the individual employee against unreasonable dismissal, the point of legal intervention varying from one country to another (Torrington,1998).
Why is Workplace Discipline Important?
· All employees following the same rules – thereby establishing uniformity and equality in the workplace.
· Managers know what to look out for and what to do while stepping in for disciplinary reasons.
· Employees abiding by various safety and security rules that could put them and the company at risk if disobeyed.
Conclusion
It shows that workplace discipline which are often neglected by some management is critical for the success of the organization. To get job satisfaction, it should be encouraged to show discipline that traverse the entire length and breadth of the given organizations.
